A quality shoe has a welted sole and is made from premium leather. A welted sole indicates that the shoe is durable and long-lasting because the sole is stitched to the upper instead of being glued. This also makes the shoe easy to repair, depending somewhat on the attachment method. The most common methods are Goodyear welt and Blake welt; the former can be done by hand, while the latter requires a special sewing machine to attach the sole. Both methods have their own strengths: the Goodyear welt sole is particularly easy to repair, while the Blake welt is favored for its flexibility and lightness.
